A Spooktacular Halloween Wedding at Plum Park

Halloween weddings are something truly magical, and this year, I had the absolute honour of providing the photography for my first Halloween-themed alternative wedding. From the moment Jess messaged me on Instagram, I knew this was going to be a day to remember. Her excitement was contagious, and it was clear she had a vision for a celebration that was anything but ordinary.

In the weeks leading up to the big day, I discovered Jess’s decorator on Instagram purely by chance. I had been scrolling through my feed and had stumbled across Foxglove and Black, who had just shared a story about completing a venue visit for Jess & Andrews big day. I was absolutely obsessed with Becky's work as it is so different to the majority of my weddings. As a photographer, I always look forward to every wedding, but this one promised to be something extraordinary—a Halloween wedding with an alternative twist. Getting Ready

On the day of the wedding, I arrived early at Plum Park to introduce myself to the new owners and familiarize myself with any changes to the venue. They’d transformed the space beautifully, replacing the marquee with a stunning wooden structure and optimizing the already gorgeous grounds for an even more magical atmosphere—especially after dark.

Upstairs, Jess and her bridesmaids were in full prep mode, with Avril Lavigne blasting in the background and laughter filling the room. From the moment I stepped in, I knew this was going to be an incredible day. Jess was brimming with personality, asking for fun shots of her jumping on the bed and even posing in the bath—a photographer’s dream!

Of course, the highlight of the morning was when Jess revealed her black dress. It suited her perfectly and set the tone for the wonderfully unique celebration to come.

The Ceremony

The ceremony at Plum Park was light-filled and intimate, with just close friends and family sharing in Jess and Andrew’s special moment. Personal touches made it even more memorable, from heartfelt poems to moments of laughter—like when Andrew accidentally dropped the ring mid-vows! Thankfully, it didn’t roll far, and the ceremony continued without a hitch.

Having a smaller guest list meant we could breeze through confetti and group shots, leaving plenty of time for Jess and Andrew to relax, mingle, and even cuddle with the venue’s adorable resident puppy!

Couples' Portraits

One of my favorite parts of the day was taking Jess and Andrew around the venue for their couple portraits. Plum Park’s grounds are a photographer’s paradise, especially with all the Halloween-inspired decor creating unique backdrops. We took our time, capturing romantic moments under the lantern-lit trees and playful shots surrounded by pumpkins and candelabras.

For couples considering their portrait time, I recommend setting aside 20-30 minutes. It’s the perfect window to create a mix of posed and candid shots without pulling you away from your guests for too long.

The Reception

Jess and Andrew’s reception was a masterclass in how to blend elegance with a touch of Halloween magic. The room was beautifully decorated with pumpkins, lanterns, candelabras, and a ‘til death neon sign that perfectly captured the mood. As one bridesmaid put it, it was “Halloween, but classy.”

The evening was filled with everything you’d want from a Halloween celebration: sparklers, tarot card readings (some of which were spookily accurate!), and a playlist packed with alternative and rock classics. Naturally, “Thriller” and “Ghostbusters” made their way onto the dance floor too, adding to the fun.

Why I Love Alternative Wedding Photography

Jess and Andrew’s wedding wasn’t just a celebration of their love—it was a reflection of their personalities, their passions, and their unique story. That’s why I love photographing alternative weddings. Whether it’s a Halloween theme, a gothic touch, or something entirely different, these weddings are always brimming with creativity and individuality.

If you’re planning an alternative wedding and want a photographer who’s just as excited about your vision as you are, I’d love to chat!
